Current statistics show that the NBA in 2015 was composed of 74.4% black players, 23.3 % white players, 1.8% Latino players, and 0.2% Asian players.
That in no way, shape or form represents the current demographics of America which currently stands at 62.0% white, 17.3% Hispanic/Latino, 12.6% Black, 5.2% Asian, and 4.8% other (2016 Data).
Affirmative action is needed to increase Asian, Latino and White participation in the NBA. Black people are over represented at over 5 times the US average.
I propose a cap of 20% Blacks in the NBA similar to the defacto 20% cap of Asians at Ivy league universities. Obviously this sounds ridiculous at first. We can argue that those black NBA players worked harder, practiced more, and deserve to be in the NBA. But shouldn’t the same be said to the Asian students at Harvard?
This doesn’t even go into the racist immigration policies of the USA. Black people were descended from slaves picked primarily for strength. Slavers picked those they thought would survive the grueling Atlantic voyage and would work the fields picking cotton. On the flip side, we have Asian Americans also picked similarly via the H1B policy. Is it not farfetched to surmise that the children of professors, scientists, engineers, and doctors be smarter than average? And yet we don’t see as striking disparity in academics as we do in the NBA.
